  the Montefeltro region

The Montefeltro region is an area with extremely important environmental, historic and cultural features. It is mainly hilly and mountainous, with many green valleys and woodlands, where farming and forestry, handicrafts and artistic crafts, small-medium industries and tourism all co-exist in places of rare beauty.

In terms of nature, the countryside in this area can offer vast panoramic views, hills, mountains, numerous woods, rivers, lakes and large valleys.

One landmark area is the Sasso Simone e Simoncello Natural Park, with more than 100 km of routes of varying difficulty for beginners as well as for the more experienced cyclist.

Spectators along the route are the numerous wild animals to be found in the park.

History, religion and art

The Montefeltro region is an area with an important past and since it is also an area linking north Italy/Europe to the Mediterranean/Rome, it has been influenced by many peoples, going on to become a unique and rare testimony to Roman, Byzantine, Gothic, Carolingian, and Lombard civilisations, etc.

This can clearly be seen in the numerous castles, fortresses, towers, and small fortified villages as well as in the area’s churches filled with works of art.

The Montefeltro region has also been a site at the centre of the most heated religious ardour and one of the most important areas in terms of its religious orders, as can be seen by the numerous abbeys, convents and monasteries, some of which are still centres of worship and religious inspiration today.

In terms of art, some of the most important painters of the religious and Renaissance period have worked here; artists of the calibre of Giotto, Piero della Francesca, and Luca della Robbia, whose works can be seen in the area and in the Diocese Museum in Pennabilli.

The Sasso Simone e Simoncello Natural Park

Located in the heart of the Montefeltro area, the Park extends through the municipalities of Carpegna, Frontino, Montecopiolo, Piandimeleto, Pennabilli and Pietrarubbia.

The routes through the Sasso Simone e Simoncello Park show all of the different types of vegetation present. In the area around the two large rocks (Sassi), there is a large wood of over 800 hectares, mostly turkey oaks. There are also beech trees, hornbeams and hop-hornbeams, maples and ash as well as the chess-apple and chess trees.

On Mount Carpegna and to the east of Sasso Simone there are hazel and maple woods which in autumn become red and green in a host of different hues.

the natural park
Mount Carpegna was once full of beech trees and silver firs but it was the object of deforestation in historic times and is now home to meadows and grazing land.

The area of the Sassi is only populated by the typical wildlife of the central Apennines, including the stably present Apennine wolf, once mercilessly hunted by man.

A visit to the protected area of the Park will satisfy anyone: those seeking the beauty of the panoramic views or the charm of an excursion in natural surroundings and also those looking to experience the great food or historical landmarks in the area.

Visits accompanied by Park Guides are above all available in the summer, while there is a Guide service for organised groups and school parties all year round. Schools can benefit from the Park’s Environmental Education programme. On foot, horseback or mountain bike: how you discover the Sasso Simone e Simoncello Natural Park is your choice.
